WHAT IS THE iF DESIGN AWARD

Each year 132 high profile design experts from over 20 countries around the world come together in Berlin to choose the next rising stars in design. This award gives merit to movers and shakers in the design world and rates each design on 5 specific criteria: Idea, Form, Function, Differentiation, and Impact.

The Idea criteria is rated on functionality, relevance, and purpose. Some questions the jurors are asking: Does the design achieve what it sets out to do? Is the design relevant? Is the idea appropriate? These questions allow the jury to rank the understanding of how the idea came to life in making the design of the product.

The Form criteria is rated on emotional appeal, execution, and aesthetic. The jurors want to see how the design engages the target group, how the design is made, and why it looks the way it looks. This category judges how the designers created the product and if the look and feel is aesthetically pleasing. The jurors want to know if and how the designers incorporated ergonomic design to elevate the general look of the product.

The Function criteria is rated on usability, efficiency, and user benefits. The jurors want to see if the product is easy to use, how well the product works, and how and if the product serves a purpose. These questions are used to make sure that the product is user-friendly while necessary for the target audience.

The Differentiation criteria is rated on innovation and brand differentiation. The jurors determine if the product is new and if the product relates to the brand identity. These questions are used to figure out if the product is unique and individual and how the product fits into the company.

The Impact category is rated on effectiveness, social benefit, and sustainability. The jurors seek to define  if the goal was reached with this product’s usefulness, how it is benefiting society, and whether or not the product is sustainable. This specific category is ranked based on impact and reach. The product is ranked based on its overall impact to society and whether or not it is needed in the world.
